Guy Houston
Guy Houston served in the California State Legislature from 2002 thru 2008, recently terming out of office. While in the State Assembly, Houston worked closely with Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in areas of public school funding and infrastructure. Additionally, Houston authored legislation (AB 6 -2006) regarding the implementation of AB32, the landmark Greenhouse Gas Legislation in California.
In his first term, Houston was instrumental in negotiating $110 million in additional annual public school "equalization" funding in the 2004-2005 budgets, which brought $4.5 million to under-funded schools within his District. He also authored legislation providing disaster relief funding to farmers, landowners and workers affected by the June 2004 levee break in San Joaquin County. He served as Vice-Chair of the Assembly Transportation committee.
During his second term, Houston secured an additional $350 million in equalization funding for under-funded schools. Houston authored bills to protect families from sexual predators and criminalize the illegal buying and selling of cell phone records, Houston was Vice-Chair of the Assembly Committee on Jobs, Economic Development and the Economy which strengthened the Workforce Investment Act, which is responsible for developing an education and job training program in California.
In his final term, Houston continued his focus on infrastructure and education. He established the "Port to Port Coalition", a coalition of government and business aiming at directing transportation funding to the 580 /680 freeways. Houston worked to create a business approach to regulating carbon emissions and had bills signed to increase school safety and security.
In 2003, the American Electronics Association named Guy "Legislator of the Year." The American Optometric Association bestowed this honor to Houston in 2004, as did the American Electronics Association and the Building Industry Association in 2005. Additionally, the Contra Costa Advocacy, Respect, and Commitment group presented Houston with its Government Service Award in 2005.
Prior to his service in Sacramento, Houston served as the Mayor of the City of Dublin for seven years from 1994-2001. His accomplishments included strong job growth, fiscal responsibility, elimination of city debt and strategic partnerships with local public schools. Houston served locally on the Alameda County Transit Authority, Tri-Valley Transportation Commission, Livermore-Amador Valley Transit Agency and the Local Agency Formation Commission.
Guy has utilized his contacts and experience to benefit his clients in the business and political community. He has managed industry coalitions, consultants, regulatory agencies, grass roots organizations, public relations and the media for the benefit of his clients. His major duties have included business development, property acquisition and entitlements, governmental affairs and community relations. Guy has had positions of responsibility in national, state and local political campaigns.
Giving back to the community is important to Guy. He serves as Chairman of the Easter Seals/Kaleidoscope Annual Tri-Valley Sports Hall of Fame which raises funds for the developmentally disabled and the Special Olympics programs. He also is founder and co-chair of the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Prayer Breakfast benefitting the YMCA of Alameda County.
Houston graduated from St. Mary's College, Moraga Ca. with a BS in Business '82 and Masters in Business Administration '87. Houston earned his California Real Estate License at the age of 18 and is also owner of a local residential real estate and mortgage finance company.
Houston lives in San Ramon, California with his wife Inge and his three children; Bartlett, Sumner and Glynnis Rose Houston.
